The KirkWorks3D Process

A Clear Path From Idea to Finished Print

Custom work does not have to feel complicated. You bring the starting point. I help define the practical details, provide a clear quote, produce the project, inspect it, and arrange pickup or shipping.

  1. 01

    Share the idea

Send a photograph, sketch, logo, broken part, existing 3D file, link, or short description. Include the approximate size, quantity, intended use, deadline, and anything that must match or fit.

  2. 02

    Review the project

I review what the piece needs to do and recommend the material, orientation, construction, size, color approach, finish, and whether design work or a test piece is needed.

  3. 03

    Approve the quote

You receive clear pricing and scope before production begins. The quote identifies the project, quantity, material, key dimensions, design ownership, delivery method, estimated schedule, and any required deposit or approval step.

  4. 04

    Prepare and produce

The design is prepared, sliced, and matched to the right machine. Custom details are confirmed, and proofs, test fits, or first articles are used when the project justifies them.

  5. 05

    Inspect and deliver

The finished work is inspected and photographed when appropriate. Local pickup is coordinated in Helena, or the project is packaged and shipped to the agreed destination.

What affects price

Pricing is based on print time, material, machine setup, color changes, quantity, design or file-preparation time, post-processing, assembly, packaging, and shipping. Every custom project is quoted before work begins.

Design ownership

Design to Print
KirkWorks3D prepares the design and produces the agreed finished pieces. The working production file remains with KirkWorks3D. This is usually the lower-cost option.
Design to Keep
You purchase the agreed deliverable file in addition to the design and production work. The exact file format, permitted use, and transfer terms are included in the quote.

15Frequently Asked Questions

Short answers. If yours isn’t here, text it — no obligation.

  • Do I need a 3D file?

No. A photograph, sketch, broken part, written description, logo, or link may be enough to start. If custom modeling is required, it will be identified and quoted before design work begins.

  • What file types can I send?

STL and 3MF are preferred for print-ready work. STEP, OBJ, SVG, PDF, and common image files can also be reviewed depending on the project.

  • Can you create something from a photo or sketch?

Often, yes. The amount of design work depends on the shape, detail, available measurements, and how accurately the finished piece must fit or function.

  • How much does a custom print cost?

Price depends on print time, material, size, color changes, quantity, design work, finishing, assembly, packaging, and shipping. You receive a clear quote before production begins.

  • How long will it take?

Turnaround depends on the project, the current production schedule, material availability, and whether design or testing is required. Share a true need-by date and I will give you an honest schedule.

  • Can you make something larger than the printer?

Yes, many large pieces can be divided into sections, printed separately, joined, and finished. Seam placement, strength, assembly, and shipping are planned before approval.

  • Which material should I choose?

You do not have to choose alone. Tell me where the piece will be used, the heat and sunlight it may face, whether it will flex, and what loads it must handle. I will recommend an appropriate option.

  • Can you match an exact color?

I can usually find a close stocked match from a large color selection. Exact brand matching may require an approved sample or customer-selected filament and should be discussed before quoting.

  • Can you make a replacement part that broke?

Often. Send clear photographs from several angles, one reliable measurement, and an image of where the part fits. Safety-critical, heavily loaded, medical, climbing, and certain vehicle parts are not accepted.

  • Can you print a model I bought online?

Yes, if the license permits the intended use. Send the file and proof of the rights needed to reproduce it. Files may not be copied or sold beyond their license.

  • Can you make more later?

Usually. Keeping an approved file and production specification makes repeat orders easier, subject to material availability, equipment, and scheduling.

  • Do you ship?

Yes. KirkWorks3D offers local pickup in Helena and ships finished projects across the United States. Shipping cost and method are included in the quote when applicable.

  • Can you work with a business purchase order?

Yes. Share the purchasing requirements early so the quote, invoice, vendor information, delivery, and payment process can be planned correctly.

  • Can you sign an NDA?

Customer-provided NDAs can be reviewed when confidentiality is required. Internal and prototype work is treated as confidential and is not added to the portfolio without permission.

  • What projects do you not accept?

KirkWorks3D does not accept functional firearm components, unauthorized copyrighted products for resale, safety-critical vehicle or climbing components, medical parts, or work that requires certifications or tolerances beyond the process.

What I don't take on

  • Functional firearm components
  • Copies of someone else's copyrighted or trademarked product for resale
  • Parts where failure would put someone in danger — load-bearing vehicle, climbing or medical components
  • Anything that needs a tolerance tighter than FDM printing can honestly hold; I'll say so rather than take the job

Not Sure Which Service Fits?

That is normal. Send a photo and a sentence about what you want to accomplish. I will tell you where to begin.
